Sandy Willie

$4,500.00

Paintings depict the Tjukurpa, the law and stories of ancestors. Anangu (Central and Wesern Desert Aboriginal People) have responsibilities for the protection and teaching of different Tjukurpa and there are strict protocols for the imparting of knowledge. The dotting technique has evolved with the need to adapt sacred expressions of Tjukurpa for public viewing and as a depiction of the desert landscape.

This painting relates to Sandy's traditional ancestral country around Kaltukatjara (Docker River)in the southwest of the Northern Territory. It is heavily coded reference to sacred and restricted mens law: Watiku Tjukurpa

Willie says it concerns a place called Talakatarra where the business men were camping underground. They had lit a fire to cook on when all of a sudden the fire exploded out of control and burst above ground through a hole pictured in the centre of the canvas. The lines spiralling out from the centre are the men as they leapt to safety an put the fire out.
